If you’re looking into a career where you can help protect others and foster a sense of security and duty, choosing to become a security guard is the right choice for you. Although it may sound relatively straightforward, there are plenty of things you should know before you begin signing up for security training programs. Below we discuss some essential points to consider and understand in advance.
You have to get a security license.
After you’ve gone through training and are ready to get out in the field, you must be licensed before you can get employed anywhere. This is a basic requirement expected of all security guards in Canada. Luckily, there are only a few minor boxes you have to check before you get approved. These include being eligible to work in the country, being at least 18 years old, and no criminal record. If you can meet these basic requirements, the first step is already complete!
Find a niche.
There are plenty of specific areas security guards can work in. The flexibility of these relies heavily on your skill level, experience, and reputation. You can begin your career in a more standard category at a private security company protecting various establishments like banks or apartment buildings. For most, this is the common starting point before you move on to more exciting areas.
In a similar vein, you might find an opportunity to work in crowd control and help monitor large public events and festivals. There is often lots of demand for this type of work and finding a job shouldn’t be a difficult feat.
Perhaps the most well-known job in security and the most sought after is becoming a bodyguard. These positions can prove to be more difficult and competitive to get into when you’re just starting out. However, the right talent for the job will be recognized. Overall, there are plenty of exciting niches to consider in the profession and it is important to develop some idea of where you might see yourself before you begin training.
Know the right skills to work on.
Not just any average Joe can walk into a security job and play the part. Security jobs take the right combination of different skills that most do not even consider initially. Some of these skills include communication, quick thinking, alertness, and the desire to continually improve. Having a good sense of your surroundings and being adept enough to read any situation is key.
